Technology in this day and age is extraordinary. Smartphones make our life convenient and we cannot imagine the world without smart devices anymore. However, we often spend too much time on smartphone with no purpose. We may miss any important moments while we are wasting time on looking at screen, and it may cause conversational breakdown with other people.
There are already non-digital ways for digital detox such as the phone stacking game or digital detox camp in the mountain and camp sites. However, non-digital ways have limitations when it comes to interactivity and innovation. How might we put this solution into action with digital technology? Ditox started with this question.
I didn’t want to force people stop using their smartphone, because it’s natural to use smart devices in the IT era. Instead, I decided to use technology to enhance effective digital detox and healthier digital habits. There are more worthy things you can do without smartphone than your thought, such as focusing on your work or communicating with your neighbors.
Ditox is combined with beacon technology. iBeacon is an indoor positioning system, which works using the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. Specific spaces for digital detox, called Ditox Zone, can be created with beacons. Users also can use Ditox without beacon, but beacon technology will motivate users to take an action for effective digital detox.
Beacons will be provided to corporations or public areas such as movie theater franchises, coffee shops, restaurants, fitness, and public libraries so that they can make their own Ditox space. For example, beacon installed movie theater becomes to Ditox Zone where audience can concentrate on watching movies.
As much time users do Ditox, they will be rewarded for their effort of digital detox. They can turn their Ditox time into actual points that can be used in physical area. For example, users can get discount at coffee shop or free popcorn in the movie theater. After all, Ditox suggests new trend of well-being digital habits to people, and it will promote better cultural lifestyle.
Ditox is currently developed only for iPhone, and Ditox for Apple Watch will be under developed soon.
